Our amateur theatre group needs two costume proposals. The character stays the same throughout, but the director wants to compare a precise silhouette with a relaxed one. Our starting point is the existing costume cupboard. My question concerns the overall impression of the outfit. The performer should be able to move comfortably in either version. We could photograph both versions from the same distance. Leaving out elaborate accessories would simplify the first rehearsal. Body typing labels cannot answer every question about a stage costume. The director will see the costumes under rehearsal lighting before we choose anything for the performance. I can make a small comparison sheet showing the same pose and a few movement notes. How would you describe the difference without relying on category names?
