Our community theatre is revising its costume intake form, which has prompted a discussion about body type terminology. The old form asks people to choose a body category before they have even described what feels comfortable. My preference is to ask about movement, coverage, and troublesome garment details before introducing any style vocabulary. A shared style vocabulary could help later conversations, but I do not want it to become a compulsory classification. Has anyone built an intake form that makes those distinctions clear without becoming too long? A small set of thoughtful questions would be more useful to us than another list of supposed rules. The completed form should also let performers describe their preferences in their own words before anyone offers styling suggestions.
