I am fitting a jacket in class and trying to separate practical sewing decisions from the language of style systems. One sample holds a rigid outline, but the softer fabric follows my shape even though the pattern is unchanged. We agree on where the jacket pulls, but we disagree about which style vocabulary best explains the overall effect. Before assigning myself a category, I would prefer to record what actually changes between the samples. A possible starting point for our notes is body shape and colour analysis and I would use it to frame questions rather than settle the fitting decisions. When the pattern stays constant, which observation should come first: the shoulder line, hem position, or fabric weight? My aim is a useful fitting record that explains each alteration instead of merely attaching a type label. Photographs of each sample under the same conditions should make the comparison easier to explain during the next lesson.
