Our family album project has reached some older portraits, and I am trying to describe the hairstyles in useful captions. One relative recalls using a singer as inspiration, although we have not identified the actual picture they brought along. I would like to describe the visible cut and fringe without presenting a remembered celebrity connection as a confirmed fact. For this comparison, I am using avril lavigne hairstyles as a reference. The fringe looks quite different across the portraits, especially where a longer section falls towards one side. My comparison separates colour from the haircut, since a similar shade can make two different shapes look deceptively alike. We can ask the relative about styling later, but for now the captions need to stay close to what is visible. How would you label the visible fringe shapes in plain language while leaving the uncertain inspiration out of the factual caption?
