Our drawing group is planning an exercise about how a short haircut changes the outline of a portrait. In previous sessions, people often began with tiny marks and lost track of the larger shape around the head. The reference cards could show differences at the fringe, the sides, and the spaces just above the ears. The short haircut reference I am starting with is pixie haircut and I would welcome other useful references. I would keep the discussion focused on visible shapes rather than asking participants to judge anyone’s appearance. We could trace the outside shape first, then compare where the hair overlaps the forehead and where it leaves open space. Texture would come last, with a small number of marks chosen to support the shape already established. How would you phrase a few short prompts that keep attention on silhouette before texture?
