I am preparing a drawing exercise in which participants study short hair as an overall silhouette before adding individual strands. The recurring difficulty is that texture attracts attention before anyone has looked carefully at the overall outline. The reference cards could show differences at the fringe, the sides, and the spaces just above the ears. One reference category I want to include is pixie haircut and I would welcome other useful references. The exercise is about observation, so nobody needs to decide whether a particular cut would suit their own face. We could trace the outside shape first, then compare where the hair overlaps the forehead and where it leaves open space. Only after that would we add a few directional marks to suggest texture without filling every area with lines. Which observation prompts would help beginners notice those differences while keeping the exercise simple?
