Our family photo archive needs captions, but the faded prints make some hair colors difficult to describe. Two prints from the same period seem to show different shades on the same person. We have no reliable record of a color change, and memories of the period disagree. I found a reference on describing shades through hair color analysis but I do not want a modern label to turn into an unsupported claim about someone. My current idea is to describe the visible appearance and mark the actual hair color as unconfirmed. Keeping both the untouched scan and any corrected version should make the limits of the description clearer. The captions will be shared with younger relatives who never met these people, which makes careful wording more useful than a confident guess. How would you phrase that distinction in an album caption without filling every page with technical notes?
