For an introductory portrait class, I want students to observe head outlines before naming them. Some silhouettes on my worksheet look like combinations of the usual face shape categories. My aim is to give students useful vocabulary while leaving room for differences between individuals. I have bookmarked a face shape quiz as a possible discussion prompt. I would start by comparing the questions with the outline examples already included in the lesson. One exercise could compare the forehead, cheekbones, and jaw without asking for an immediate label. The first examples would all face forward, leaving head rotation for a later part of class. I also want an example where two reasonable descriptions can both be useful to the person drawing. What teaching examples help beginners use these descriptions without treating them as fixed rules?
