While cataloguing family photographs, I have started keeping brief notes about the people pictured. Several portraits show the same person decades apart, with different expressions and camera angles. My notes about the forehead and jaw feel clearer than my attempts to name the overall shape. I saved a face shape test to help me think about the terminology. It would serve as a source of descriptive terms, with the limitations of each photograph kept visible. For example, a shadow may obscure the jaw, while a hairstyle may cover part of the forehead. Each entry would record the date and viewing angle before offering a cautious description of facial proportions. Where the pictures suggest different descriptions, I want the record to make that disagreement easy to understand. Has anyone developed a simple way to record this kind of uncertainty in a family archive?
