I am sketching a small cast of characters for a game with compact dialogue portraits. When the image is reduced, differences in the outline often remain clearer than small facial details. My concern is keeping the silhouettes varied while avoiding predictable links between face shape and personality. I found a face shape quiz while collecting vocabulary for my sketch notes. For this exercise, the terminology would be a starting point for variations rather than a set of constraints. A useful sketch sheet might change forehead and jaw proportions without changing the pose or expression. I would then reduce the sketches to their intended size and see which outline differences remain readable. The labels would remain a private organizing aid, while players would simply see the finished character designs. How do other artists explore face shape variety while leaving room for unexpected personalities and expressions?
