At our next sketching session, I would like to separate the overall head outline from details such as eyes and lips. I keep noticing the jaw first, which makes it difficult to judge the overall outline without jumping to a label. I have been looking for a reference on square face shape to help frame the discussion. My aim is to write down the proportions I can actually see, then decide whether a category helps explain them. Would it make sense to trace the forehead, cheekbones and jaw separately, then compare their widths on the same sheet? Some reference pictures hide the sides of the forehead under hair, which leaves gaps that I do not want to invent. I can bring a blank outline sheet so that everyone records the same observations before we discuss the drawings together. It would help if the exercise allowed mixed features, because a tidy label can distract us from what is actually visible. What would you ask beginners to observe first if the goal were a useful drawing reference rather than a definitive classification?
