Our small illustration group is putting together a glossary, and the section about face outlines needs a clearer editorial approach. One draft lists category names without explaining the observations behind them, while another gives so much detail that the distinctions disappear. A reference about determining face shape might help us decide which observations belong in each entry. I would like every definition to follow the same order, moving from overall length and width to the outline of the jaw. Readers could then compare the entries using the same features instead of treating one striking detail as a complete definition. We also need a short note explaining that intermediate outlines can be described without inventing a new category for each example. For the diagrams, I would use simple line drawings at the same scale and leave hairstyle details out of the comparison. I do not want the glossary to rank shapes or suggest that an illustrator should change the features of a real subject. How would you keep these entries concise while still giving beginners enough information to compare the outline categories on their own?
